The Open AIM SDK session focused mainly on the AIM Presence Web API and AIM Location Services. There were also general questions on what audio and video support the AIM APIs support.

Building AIM Presence into a web page needs to include support for annonymous presence.

The locations set by AIM users are community built by tagging gateway MAC Addresses. Once a gateway is tagged, the next time an AIM user connects via that gateway, AIM will return a best guess based on previous user tags. Privacy is important to AOL, so setting a location is opt-in and AOL does not store locations with AIM identities. Locations can only be seen by people on the user's buddy list. Further granularity is coming. Currently the location services are available as a plugin to AIM. Web APIs are coming.

Web APIs for other AIM services, such as IM, Expressions (avatars) and Buddy Lists will be available soon and will give web developers access to the AIM network.

The Open AIM SDK supports video from RTC and audio from either RTC or sipXtapi (Pingtel/SIPfoundry).
