Best Calais Mashup Contest

OFFICIAL RULES/NO PURCHASE NECESSARY

The Calais Mashup Contest" (the "Contest") is being sponsored by the Thomson Reuters Calais Initiative (the "Sponsor") in connection with Mashup Camp 7 to be held November 17-19, 2008 at the Computer History Museum in Mountain View, California (the "Conference"). Each person who enters the Contest (each, an "Entrant") agrees to abide by the terms of these Official Rules and by the decisions of the Sponsor and its judges, which are final and binding on all matters pertaining to the Contest.

There are three categories of competition in the Calais Mashup Contest:

  • Best Calais Mashup addressing the delivery and/or display of news
  • Best Calais Mashup addressing the needs of business users (professionals and/or knowledge workers)
  • Most Creative Calais Mashup overall(in any category serving any user / audience)

How to enter

To compete in the Contest, an Entrant must sign up live at Mashup Camp, anytime between 9:00 a.m. PST on Monday, November 17, 2008 and 5:00 p.m. PST on Tuesday, November 18, 2008. After signing up, the Entrant must:

  • Attend a mandatory Contestant Meeting at 5:30 p.m. PST on Tuesday, November 18, 2008. During this meeting, each Entrant must sign and return a declaration of eligibility and release of liability and provide Sponsor with social security or taxpayer I.D. number for tax reporting purposes. The declaration and release will include, to the extent permitted by law and even if already granted by a Entrant’s acceptance of these Official Rules, the grant by each Entrant of permission (without further compensation) for Sponsor to use the Entrant’s name, photograph and likeness (if an individual), logo (if any), state of residence, and Entry for advertising, promotion, marketing, and administration of the Contest and the Conference, including mention at www.mashupcamp.com.
  • Submit their Mashup to MashupContest@OpenCalais.com by 9:00 a.m. PST on Wednesday, November 19, 2008. An Entrant must submit a link to their mashup application along with a clear definition of problem/solution or statement of value of information in the design.

Entrants may list their intention to participate at http://wiki.mashupcamp.com/index.php/SpeedGeeking8. However, listing one’s intention to participate does not improve one’s chances of winning.

Entrants who wish to get started early (before Mashup Camp begins) can email the Calais team at MashupContest@OpenCalais.com to gain access to special resources.

Notification

Entries will be evaluated by representatives of the Thomson Reuters Calais Initiative in conjunction with Mashup Camp Organizers at the Conference (collectively, the "Judges"). Judging will be completed by 4:00 p.m. PST on Wednesday, November 19, 2008 at the Conference. The prize winners will be determined by the Judges.

Sponsor will notify the potential winners, in person, on Wednesday, November 19, 2008 during the Awards & Cocktail Reception at the end of the last day of the Conference. Sponsor’s decision is final.

Entrant must be present at the Mashup Camp Awards & Cocktail Reception to win.

This contest is sponsored by the Thomson Reuters Calais Initiative, 1601 Trapelo Road, Waltham, MA 02451.

Entrant requirements

Any Entrant who does not satisfy all of the requirements of this section may be disqualified, and Sponsor may select an alternate winning Entry from the remaining Entries.

Each Entrant will be required to attend a mandatory meeting ("Contestant Meeting") at 5:30 p.m. PST on Tuesday, November 18, 2008. During this meeting, each Entrant must sign and return a declaration of eligibility and release of liability and provide Sponsor with social security or taxpayer I.D. number for tax reporting purposes. Developers may use any resources to which they have access, as well as those posted on the Calais Mashup Content site at http://www.OpenCalais.com/MashupStart. Sponsor reserves the right to share ownership and use of the winning Calais Mashups with any and all of its affiliates, without limitation.

Each Entrant will be responsible for his or her own costs of travel, meals, accommodations, and equipment in connection with the Contest and the Conference. All individual Entrants and representatives of business entity Entrants must be in sufficient physical condition for safe travel to the Conference.

Prize list

One (1) Drobo 4TB storage devices with an approximate value of $999.00 each will be awarded in Three Categories.

All monetary amounts in these Official Rules are indicated in United States dollars. Each Entrant will be solely responsible for bearing any income or other taxes, fees, or other costs relating to any prize. Total approximate value of all prizes combined = $2,997.00 US Dollars (Three thousand two hundred ninety-seven US dollars).

Sponsor will mail the prize to the winner upon receipt of completed W-9 and release documentation. In the event of unavailability of the stated prize, Sponsor reserves the right to substitute items of equal or greater value.

Taxes are the sole responsibility of winner and winner will be required to complete a W-9 form and submit it to The Thomson Reuters Calais Initiative, c/o Krista Thomas, Krista.Thomas@ThomsonReuters.com.

Winner must have signed and returned an affidavit of eligibility, liability release and have granted permission to use his/her name and likeness for advertising and promotion (without further compensation to the winner) during the Mandatory Contestant Meeting on Tuesday, November 18, 2008 or alternate winner(s) will be selected. (Tennessee residents need not complete and return a publicity release.)

Contest void where prohibited or restricted by law.

Eligibility

Contest open to legal residents of the 50 United States, including the District of Columbia (but not Puerto Rico) who are 18 years or older, who register on-site by 5:00 p.m. PST on Tuesday, November 18, 2008, attend the mandatory Contestant Meeting, submit their Social Justice Mashup entry and participate in SpeedGeeking on Wednesday, November 19, 2008.

Employees of Thomson Reuters its affiliates, advertising, promotion and production agencies and members of their immediate families (including spouse, parents, siblings, grandparents, grandchildren, step-children, step-parents and in-laws) or those with whom they are domiciled are not eligible.

Criteria

The winners will be selected based upon the votes cast by the Judges. Judges will evaluate the Calais Mashup entries in the three aforementioned categories – the best news application, the best business application, and the most creative application – based upon usage of the Calais Web service that demonstrates:

  • A novel and engaging way in which the technology delivers features;
  • Exceptional creativity and usability in the development of the software Mashup;
  • A clear definition of problem/solution or statement of value of information in the design.

Representations

By entering the Contest, each individual submitting entry materials (including an actual mashup Entry) represents and warrants to Sponsor that:

  • such individual either is the Entrant (if the Entrant is an individual) or is a fully authorized representative of the Entrant (if the Entrant is a business entity);
  • the Entrant and the Entry fully comply with all eligibility requirements and all other provisions of these Official Rules;
  • in preparing the Entry and entering and participating in the Contest and the Conference, the Entrant has complied and will comply in all respects with all applicable laws, regulations, and rules and has not violated nor will violate any agreement or understanding by which it is bound, including any confidentiality, employment, consulting, intellectual property assignment, or license agreement.
  • such individual is the person identified on the Contest registration form;
  • the individual and the Entry fully comply with all eligibility requirements and all other provisions of these Official Rules;
  • in preparing Entry and entering and participating in the Contest, the individual has complied and will comply in all respects with all applicable statutes, regulations, rules, orders, or other laws and has not violated, and will not violate, any agreement or understanding by which it is bound, including any confidentiality, employment, consulting, intellectual property assignment or license agreement;
  • that the individual is not bound by any intellectual property agreement or any other agreement or obligation, with an employer, co-owner or otherwise, that prohibits, limits or affects: (a) the individual’s ownership of the Entry; (b) the individual’s right to submit the Entry to the Sponsor; or (c) Sponsor’s ownership in the Entry and license to use such individual’s Contestant’s name, photograph, voice, likeness, logo, and biographical information as set forth herein.

Termination

Sponsor reserves the right to cancel, terminate, modify, or suspend the Contest in its sole and absolute discretion if the Contest becomes technically corrupted or is not capable of being run as planned, including infections by computer virus, bugs, tampering, unauthorized intervention, fraud, technical failures or any other causes beyond the control of Sponsor that corrupt or affect the administration, security, fairness, integrity, or proper conduct of the Contest. In such event, Sponsor will post notice at the Conference and on the Contest Website and will implement an alternate means for awarding the prize.

Miscellaneous

If any part of these Official Rules is held by a court of competent jurisdiction to be invalid, illegal, or otherwise unenforceable, such part will be deemed modified or eliminated to the extent necessary, in the court’s opinion, to make it enforceable while preserving the original intent of the Sponsor, and the remaining parts of these Official Rules will remain in full force and effect. The Contest will be governed by, and these Official Rules will be interpreted by, and enforced in accordance with, the laws of the State of New York and applicable United States federal law, without regard to any conflicts of laws principles. The Contest is void where prohibited by law. Any dispute arising out of or relating to these Official Rules, the Contest, the Conference, or any prize must be brought exclusively in the state or federal courts located in New York, New York, and Sponsor and each Entrant irrevocably waive any objection to the venue and jurisdiction thereof.
