Unconference Discussion Ideas - Mountain View - Nov 17-19, 2008

THIS PAGE CAN BE EDITED BY THE MASHUP CAMP COMMUNITY.

Here's where you should give buy pistachios people an idea of the session(s) you might propose during Mashup Camp. But first, you should familiarize yourself bankers life with how things work at the Book of Ra Camp.

Overview

Much of Mashup Camp is conducted using Open Space Technology. At the beginning of the 2nd day, there will be a General Assembly Virginia reckless driving where attendees will be asked to propose the discussions they're interested in leading. It works like this: attendees write their proposed discussion in link building service magic marker on a piece of paper, line up for their turn at the microphone, propose a discussion and, on a whiteboard that lists all of the available rooms and timeslots in grid fashion, tape their proposed discussion into one of the available room/times. There are several different rooms and time slots available, which means plenty of opportunity to propose different sessions. see: symptoms of kidney stones gall bladder symptoms Education,Point of Sale Software, Prune Cooking Oil

Principles of Open Space

There are several principles of Open Space:

  • Whoever comes are the right people.
  • Whatever happens is the only thing that could have.
  • Whenever it starts is the right time.
  • When it is over, it is over.
  • Document your session on the wiki.

The law of two feet

There is also the Law of Two Feet:

If during the course of the gathering, any person finds themselves in a situation where they are neither casino learning from nor contributing to the discussion, they should use their two feet and go to a more productive place.

Proposed discussions

Please "copy" the format used by one of the entries below to create a new entry.

Below is a list of proposed discussions for unconference portion of Mashup Camp. At the end of each description could be a link to a detail level page where you can get more information, indicate your interest in attending the discussion, and flesh out the topic in more detail with other attendees. However, in some cases, the detail level pages are not setup yet. If they're not, feel free to start the detail level page associated with a specific topic and get the conversation going!

Mashable Database (Proposed by Geoff Hendrey)

The Google Maps JavaScript API ushered in the era of Mashups, and introduced the masses to AJAX programming. What if a full featured, hosted relational database could be securely accessed from a JavaScript API? Could this be the next revolution in clientside application development? NextDB.net has developed a "round trip" security model that allows for secure read-write database programming, from JavaScript, with zero serverside application programming. Come and engage in a lively discussion about this new programming paradigm. See: website design for free

Mashups for Blogs (Proposed by Beth Blecherman)

What mashups are there that bloggers can use to help manage their community or the business behind their blogs? For example, one mashup that I would like to see is something that can search my blog email account for PR and companies wanting to do business with me and load to some sort of CRM system. Many bloggers I know use their blogs to represent their business or online image, so organizing the blog emails would be a great tool.

Mobility Effect on Mashups (Proposed by Nikunj Mehta)

Location-based mashup applications offer immense possibilities. However, when you are developing for mobile devices, what do you do about fragmentation of mobile platforms? In this discussion, we will explore the challenges of making your mashup mobile ready, including location, offline, responsiveness, and interactivity. We will bring together mobile Web developers to share their experiences using Web technologies and distribution techniques as well as mashup developers that have gone mobile.

Web Browser Local Persistence - Offline Acccess and Much, Much More (Proposed by Nikunj Mehta)

Four major approaches have come to the front in this area - Apache's Derby (a.k.a. JavaDB), Adobe's Flash, Google's Gears, and Oracle's AtomDB. In addition to different technology solutions above, there are also the new crop of Web browsers that include built-in local persistence. In this panel discussion, we'll talk about the challenges of building offline applications and how developers can navigate an increasingly complicated landscape of offline technologies.

Unified Data Access Methods for Web Applications and Mashups (Proposed by Nikunj Mehta)

Should applications design one protocol and format for applications and another for mashups? How should one implement data access techniques in the browser and how can they be used across data sources? This discussion will bring together perspectives to make data interfaces widely usable for application and mashup developers.

Mashing up Life-streams (blogs, Twitter, Digg, etc.) to power Discovery Search (MikePrince)

The 90's saw an explosion of content on the Internet which provided awesome opportunities for companies like Google to service the need to search for relevant information. This decade the explosion is in user-generated content, and people are currently drowning in deep streams of information from their extended networks of friends. Life-streams expose this rich information, and this discussion will talk about how to technically access this information and then to use it to personalize use experiences and surface socially relevant information.

Rendering Your Website on the IPhone and "G-Phone" (Proposed by MikePrince)

Apple and Google are redefining the mobile web experience. This talk will cover the technical details of adapting a traditional desktop web site to display on the next generation of mobile browsers.

Mashups For Ordinary Humans (Proposed by ChrisRadcliff)

Mashups are seen as cutting-edge applications, but the same techniques can be used to set up a clean, usable Web presence on a shoestring budget, to be used by people who think the Internet is a series of tubes. I'm currently working on such a site for the San Diego Space Society, and I'd be happy to share my experiences or spark a discussion about halloween contact lenses

Making the Case (Internally) For Taking the Mashup Approach To the Next Enterprise Software Project

There are a lot of benefits to the mashup approach for business software projects. But getting sign-off on breaking from the norm can be a challenge. In this discussion, we want to begin the collaboration on the documents (text, slides, etc.) that will remain publicly accessible for anyone who wants a big head start on making the case for mashups inside their organizations. Mashups for the Greater Good (Proposed by A. Ferrate)

I'm interested in discussing, showcasing, and/or brainstorming on the use of mashups for social, environmental, and humanitarian causes. Mashups have proven to be valuable in various aspects and contexts, and it would be great to discuss how the numerous APIs out there have been used or could be used for the greater good.

Designing for Data Portability (Presented by Steve Repetti)

The issue of Data Portability permeates all aspects of our digital life and includes issue of rights, control, privacy, interoperability, transparency, accountability, and more. This discussion will explore these issues primarily as it relates to developers and is being presented by Steve Repetti, board member of the international DataPortability organization. Beyond Mashups: A world with Web Hooks (Proposed by Jeff Lindsay)

The mashup emerged as APIs became commonplace and resulted in an explosion of new web services. While solving useful problems, this "aggregation" technique only creates a more complex world. Instead, or at least in concert with, we could be dissolving problems by "integrating" and extending our existing (but obviously insufficient) web services. Like the API created the opportunity of mashups, web hooks will create an entirely new kind of opportunity.

Green Mashups (Proposed by Neil Blecherman)

Gartner recently identified both "green" and "mashup" as two of the Top 10 Strategic Technologies for 2008. Past demos at Mashup Camp have covered green areas including mass transit. There is demand for innovative green mashups for the green data center, traffic crowdsourcing, measuring carbon footprints, using APIs to reduce PC and server power consumption and more. The goal of this discussion is to identify best practices and areas for collaboration.

It's All About the Use Case (Proposed by John Herren)

We've been making mashups for a while now. We know where the feeds and APIs are and how to use them. We know how to combine, visualize, and aggregate delicious data into new information. In this session, let's share and explore the creative process used to imagine the use cases for this amazing toolkit. We'll talk about how we draw inspiration, and how each of us comes up with the secret sauce for our mashup projects. I'll bring along my ideas.txt file to share some of the ones I'll never get around to, and I hope you'll do the same!

The Holy Grail Knowledge Mashup (Proposed by John Herren)

Knowledge is, after all, a non-rivalrous good. There exists a mashup that brings together the collective intelligence of the web, but can it be realized? In this session we'll find out, and in the process we'll take on all of the pain points of mashups: from the technical hurdles like discovery and scalability to the subjective challenges of bias and quality. We'll talk about the best and worst examples of knowledge dissemination and how it varies among niches, and ask the question: Is the search engine really the best way to find information?

Learning and Teaching How to Create Mashups (Proposed by Raymond Yee)

In this session we will share our experiences about how we teach others to create mashups, as well as how we ourselves learn about mashups. What approaches do you use? What has worked and what hasn't?

The Dimensions of Presence (Proposed by Nan Hickman)

Presence: the kind you get, the kind you give. We're all familiar with the green and red dots from IM, but where is presence going? What are the dimensions of presence and what do you see as its future? What could you do with more information? Presence is key to more intelligence to mashups. Let's talk about the growth in this space.

A ~ for your mashup (Proposed by Jeff Scudder)

Since your mashup data already lives in the cloud, why not let your mashup live there too. Learn how App Engine can provide a highly-scalable home for your mashup. I'll also show some mashups that run on App Engine and dive into how they work.

OpenSocial - bring people into your mashups (Proposed by Kevin Marks)

OpenSocial means that you can run your mashup applications in social sites with hundreds of millions of users, and find out about them and their friends to make them more meaningful. Or if you prefer, you can bring social data to your site via REST APIs.

Cloud Computing - How To Deploy your idea. (Proposed by Edward M. Goldberg)

Now that you have this great idea you may want to start thinking about how to deploy the site. Clouds come to mind. Please come join a discussion about the many deployment solutions and share your experiences. I will share a few of my experiences and we can all sit around the campfire and eat some-mores.

Please visit the CloudComputing page for the meeting notes.

The iPhone and Jailbreak- Should you? Is it worth it?. (Proposed by Christopher Peri)

There are many new iPhone users coming online everyday. As well as the normal questions I seem to hear, the most common seem to be around Jailbreaking. So I thought I would talk a bit about my experiences, why you may or may not, and pitfalls to avoid.

The iPhone, biking and GPS- How to use the iPhone as a biking, hiking or running computer. (Proposed by Christopher Peri)

If you do any level of regular biking, running or hiking, and have an iPhone, you have some great free tools at your disposal. I have tested a number of them and will discuss the three that I feel cover the range of functionality useful for anyone who would love to know a bit more about their biking performance, or see where they hiked on a run, to get a calorie count on their last run.

The Future of Ecommerce: Retailer APIs (Proposed by Omar Abdelwahed)

Retailers like Amazon and Best Buy have "opened" their stores in a new way. By allowing direct access to product information, developers can create mashups that launch stores on Facebook; or use the iPhone to locate that last Wii blocks away; or even earn money through affiliate programs. Where might this lead? I'll demo two examples using Best Buy's Remix API, Twitter and Google App Engine and discuss what the future may bring.

Please see FutureOfEcommerce for notes!

Mashup Security (Proposed by Dragos Manolescu)

Current Mashups rely on the Web 1.0 security model. While exposing a subset of the JavaScript language improves the security somewhat (aka AdSafe or FBJS), a new generation of security solutions is emerging, such as Caja or Web Sandbox. I'm interested in learning about others' perspectives about Mashup security: scenarios, techniques, exploits, loan modification

etc. If there's interest I could also demo, talk about, and/or show you how to experiment with Live Labs Web Sandbox, a technology that solves this problem through virtualization.

Mashups and APIs for learning, teaching, and research (Proposed by Raymond Yee)

I'd definitely like to chat with others interested in the application of APIs and mashups in both formal and informal educational settings -- how they can help people learn about the world, teach others, or make new discoveries.

Creating custom maps with the Google Maps API (Proposed by Fred Chung)

Discuss ways to create maps mashups using custom map (image) tiles.

Mashups meet SOA - Introduction to the WSO2 Mashup Server (Proposed by Jonathan Marsh)

Introduction and demo of the open source WSO2 Mashup Server project.

Modeling a REST API with WADL and using it in a mashup (Proposed by JirkaKopsa)

WADL is up and coming standard for describing REST APIs; and an essential part of some mashup tools or runtimes. In this discussion I want to talk about use cases, where WADL is or could be applicable, bring up challenges in using WADL to model existing APIs, propose solutions and share my hands-on experience from this area. Fresno Web Design Notes from our session

Anatomy of a highly scalable Facebook application (Proposed by Prakash Narayan)

Many Facebook applications are “toy” applications and not considered “worthwhile”. To quote Tim O'Reilly, "Stop throwing sheep and create something meaningful." I will first show an example of a deep Facebook application that can support 100s of millions of records, delivers data to millions of users with acceptable latencies. We will look into the anatomy of this application and lead a discussion around what it takes to build scalable Facebook/OpenSocial applications “in the cloud”.

Harnessing the WWW (Wild Wild Web) (Proposed by Chris Crabtree)

Learn how to easily collect and access unstructured web data via the Mozenda SaaS system and REST API.

Mapping Ajax/Java Scripts to Streams DB Scripts to solve mashup Security, Governance and Scalability issues "Over the Cloud" (Proposed by Shyam Sarkar)

Mashups are going to be used in large numbers everywhere including enterprises. It is nontrivial task to enforce security, authorization, GRC and scalability issues over the cloud. Streams databases are new database implementations to deal with streaming web data storage and manipulations. Streams DB provides declarative syntax and semantics for infinite streaming data. Ajax and Java scripts also provide declarative syntax/semantics for streaming data from anywhere "in a cloud". A simple mapping from one to another can solve major problems in Enterprise mashup and social networks.
