Elfenworks Best Social Justice Mashup Contest

OFFICIAL RULES/NO PURCHASE NECESSARY

The "Best Social Justice Mashup Contest" (the "Contest") is being sponsored by United Business Media LLC (the "Sponsor") in connection with Mashup Camp 7 to be held November 17-19, 2008 at the Computer History Museum in Mountain View, California (the "Conference"). Each person who enters the Contest (each, an "Entrant") agrees to abide by the terms of these Official Rules and by the decisions of the Sponsor and its judges, which are final and binding on all matters pertaining to the Contest.

How to Enter

To compete in the Contest, an Entrant must sign up live at Mashup Camp, anytime between 9:00 a.m. PST on Monday, November 17, 2008 and 5:00 p.m. PST on Tuesday, November 18, 2008. After signing up, the Entrant must:

  • Submit their Mashup to mashup.contest@elfenworks.org by 9:00 a.m. PST on Wednesday, November 19, 2008. An Entrant must submit a link to their mashup application along with a clear definition of problem/solution or statement of value of information in the design.
  • Attend a mandatory Contestant Meeting at 5:30 p.m. PST on Tuesday, November 18, 2008. During this meeting, each Entrant must sign and return a declaration of eligibility and release of liability and provide Sponsor with social security or taxpayer I.D. number for tax reporting purposes. The declaration and release will include, to the extent permitted by law and even if already granted by a Entrant’s acceptance of these Official Rules, the grant by each Entrant of permission (without further compensation) for Sponsor to use the Entrant’s name, photograph and likeness (if an individual), logo (if any), state of residence, and Entry for advertising, promotion, marketing, and administration of the Contest and the Conference, including mention at www.mashupcamp.com.
  • Be present on-site at Mashup Camp on Wednesday, November 19, 2008 in order to present their software mashups to Mashup Camp attendees. Entrants will sit at a table provided by the event hosts in order to demonstrate their mashup Entry on their laptop. The event hosts do not guarantee power, but do make best efforts to provide network availability.

Entrants may list their intention to participate at http://wiki.mashupcamp.com/index.php/SpeedGeeking8. However, listing one’s intention to participate does not improve one’s chances of winning.

Entrants who wish to get started early (before Mashup Camp begins) can email the Elfenworks Foundation at mashup.contest@elfenworks.org to gain access.

Notification

Entries will be evaluated by the Elfenworks Foundation in conjunction with Mashup Camp Organizers at the Conference (collectively, the "Judges"). Judging will be completed by 4:00 p.m. PST on Wednesday, November 19, 2008 at the Conference. The prizewinner will be determined by the Judges.

Sponsor will notify the potential winner, in person, on Wednesday, November 19, 2008 during the Awards & Cocktail Reception at the end of the last day of the Conference. Sponsor’s decision is final. This contest is sponsored by United Business Media LLC, 600 Community Drive, Manhasset, NY 11030.

Entrant Requirements

Any potential winner (each, an "Entrant") who does not satisfy all of the requirements of this section may be disqualified, and Sponsor may select an alternate winning Entry from the remaining Entries.

Each Entrant will be required to attend a mandatory meeting ("Contestant Meeting") at 5:30 p.m.

Developers may use RSS feeds from a list which will be posted on the Elfenworks Foundation site at www.elfenworks.org/harmony_mashupcamp.html. The list of RSS feeds will also be made available at the Elfenworks Foundation table at Mashup Camp 7. Sponsor reserves the right to share ownership and use of the winning Social Justice Mashup with any and all of its affiliates, without limitation.

Each Entrant will be responsible for his or her own costs of travel, meals, accommodations, and equipment in connection with the Contest and the Conference. All individual Entrants and representatives of business entity Entrants must be in sufficient physical condition for safe travel to the Conference.

Prize List

One (1) Cash prize of $2,500.00 US dollars (Two thousand five hundred US dollars) will be awarded.

In the event of unavailability of the stated prize, Sponsor reserves the right to substitute items of equal or greater value. Winner must have signed and returned an affidavit of eligibility, liability release and have granted permission to use his/her name and likeness for advertising and promotion (without further compensation to the winner) during the Contestant Meeting on Tuesday, November 18, 2008 or an alternate winner(s) will be selected. (Tennessee residents need not complete and return a publicity release.) Contest void where prohibited or restricted by law.

Prize Terms

All monetary amounts in these Official Rules are indicated in United States dollars. Each Entrant will be solely responsible for bearing any income or other taxes, fees, or other costs relating to any prize.

Sponsor will mail the prize to the winner upon receipt of completed W-9 and release documentation.

Eligibility

Entrants may list their intention to participate at http://wiki.mashupcamp.com/index.php/SpeedGeeking8. Early listing of one’s intention to participate does not improve one’s chances of winning. One live entry at the Event per person is permitted. The use of any automated devices in connection with this promotion is prohibited. Entries made live at the Conference will be deemed made by the authorized account holder of the e-mail address submitted at the time of entry. In the event of a dispute, potential winner may be required to provide proof that the potential winner is the authorized account holder of the e-mail address associated with the potentially winning entry.

Criteria

The winners will be selected based upon the votes cast by the Judges. Judges will evaluate the Social Justice Mashup entries based upon:

  • A novel and engaging way in which the technology delivers features;
  • Exceptional creativity and usability in the development of the software Mashup;
  • Domestic poverty related (as opposed to international);
  • Must have a "Ripple" effect! (inspire and motivate entrants to develop solutions for poverty)
  • Must have a clear definition of problem/solution or statement of value of information in the design.

Liability/Terms and Conditions

By entering, Entrants release United Business Media LLC and its officers, employees, directors, agents and affiliates with respect to the use of the prize(s) awarded herein, agree to be bound by these rules, and consent to the use of their names and likeness for advertising and/or promotional and/or marketing purposes without additional compensation. In such event, Sponsor will post notice at the Conference and on the Contest Website and will implement an alternate means for awarding the prize.

If any part of these Official Rules is held by a court of competent jurisdiction to be invalid, illegal, or otherwise unenforceable, such part will be deemed modified or eliminated to the extent necessary, in the court’s opinion, to make it enforceable while preserving the original intent of the Sponsor, and the remaining parts of these Official Rules will remain in full force and effect.
