Using platform interfaces for context awareness (Intel)
Intel has sdk – are there applications/interest in developing API’s to provide contextual awareness?
• Intent is to have API to provide state awareness within client environment so that developer need not have to address
o Connectivity, bandwidth, storage, power, signal strength, location (ip address, wifi MAC address, gps, etc), proximity (what is around you, who/what else is connected around you), display, processor, nw adaptor, etc
• Java scripting just runs therefore there is no opt in capability – unlike cookies in browser you would need to ask user in api, would also then need to integrate with browser so that someone could not get to same thing through the browser.
• By detecting battery drain rate a portal could monitor and then offer/take you to a battery store or provide a means by which vendor could spam/contact – openness aspect of these context issues has some concern with privacy and question of awareness and opt in considerations.
• Besides context awareness, need to provide adaptive capability within the application – e.g display - understanding geometry, resolution, layout, orientation of screen, etc. without having to know natively
• Most perspectives in the discussion focused on user/client experience and preservation of privacy, but it seems that this has real value in terms of enterprise resource management and awareness in the event of degraded services – both gradual or catastrophic and especially in terms of enterprise functions during a COOP event (e.g. know device location and n/w access as well as power source/strength, if on battery, bandwidth to manage/be aware of data flows , etc)
Isn't there an interesting abstraction of this concept to apply it to active RFID tagging and interaction with its environment and proximal interactors?
