Thomas Piper is a research scientist in the Urban Information Systems Group of MIT's Department of Urban Studies and Planning. His work focuses on applied research in the area of urban design, planning and interactive technology. Piper has pioneered the use of print, broadcast and the Internet to support major civic dialogues. Media partners include Boston.com, Boston Globe, Boston Magazine, New England Cable News, WCVB-TV5 and WGBH. Currently, Piper directs the FutureBOSTONTM project, exploring innovation in business, design, technology and energy in to support Boston’s economic development and competitive edge. In 1982, Piper produced the first interactive documentary integrated with computing over a cable television system to gauge public opinion on an issue, for which he received a national Cable Ace award. In 2002, Piper was the recipient of the Columbia-DuPont Award for excellence in broadcast journalism and in 1983 was awarded a New England Regional Emmy. Piper received his BA in Architecture from the University of Nebraska and his M Arch AS from MIT.
